Join this fun walk to explore the architecture, people, sights, and life of Walled City through photography, and most importantly to have fun. We will start with a warm-up discussion, decide some themes, can discuss some bits of camera tricks that can come in handy and will walk through time and space of old times. Bring your camera, along with a friend may be, it will be fun.

HISTORY AND THE OLD CITY
Space: Delhi Gate and Walled City

The walk aims for the young public to participate in an active dialogue on heritage and social advocacy issues. It has drawn inspiration from the cultural values of Lahore for its people who have lived in the city for decades and centuries and wishes to dig deeper to connect to its roots. We will talk about city’s documented traditions, the Sufi rituals and the various processes of heritage preservation and conservation of the rich cultural heritage of Lahore.
The walk will start from Delhi gate area, beginning the tour from Shahi Hammam Complex, interpretation of cultural values attached with royal bathing, moving on to the Wazir Khan Masjid and Dina Nath Well, then to Sonehri Masjid, talk about Sikh influence on Muslim architecture and then walk back to Delhi gate.

Lahore Fort has been a symbol of the city’s earliest days. If the walls could speak, you would be able to hear such stories that can leave the listener transported. The architectural design, patterns, and corners of the space tell stories of triumph, love, and adventure. The walk will be guided by experts on Islamic art and architecture and the young public will be looking into the old and new forms of architecture that make the Lahore Fort a spectacular heritage treasure.

Wajahat Ali has received his Bachelors of Architecture from the National College of Arts, Lahore Pakistan in December 2001 and a Master of Architecture in design from University of Nottingham, UK in 2006. In addition, he has also completed Masters in Cultural Projects for Development from the University of Turin, Italy in 2007. Currently, he is working with Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan (AKCSP) as a Manager Conservation and Design.

Space: Lawrence Garden – Bagh e Jinnah

The spaces around us breathe and are living and our connection with them needs a deeper introspection. Nature provides inspiration to all people whether creators, makers or general public and this influences their works and their perception of new thought, forms in literature, music, technology and politics. This walk will take young people around the old flora and fauna and Botanical Gardens of historical Lawrence Hall and Garden. Participants will be taking part in discussions on the history of the trees, the role and importance of the garden for Lahore and hands-on interaction with the art installation by Mehreen Murtaza which explores the intersection between technology and plants.

Mehreen Murtaza completed her BFA with Honors from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore in May 2008. She has been a participant of the Home Workspace program led by Jalal Toufic and Anton Vidokle at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut, Lebanon. She explores the intersecting worlds of technology and nature, science and religion.

The walks are presented as part of Lahore Biennale 01 and are part of “Connect. Culture” program that encourages young people to re-visit the city and its culture.
